Luke's Birth Story
I had been having very convincing Braxton Hicks Contractions starting at 35 weeks when Brent headed off on a hike
(out of cell phone range) with my brother-in-law and my Mother flew to Cancun. I was terrified I would be giving birth on my own so I stayed glued to the couch! When I went to my doctors appointment that Monday morning my doctor said my body was progressing and it was looking like I would have a baby within 2 weeks! Sweet deal!
Week after week I would labor and it would get consistent and more intense and then go away after 2 hours. I wasn't sleeping at night and I was getting angry that my body was playing chicken with me.With Brent in school and big exams on the schedule I was stressing out!
When his last exam was done, we scheduled and induction for the fallowing morning, Wednesday the 20th. We had to sign papers and check-in at 2:30 am. I started contracting at midnight and by the time we arrived at the hospital they were 5 minutes apart. Perfect timing and I got to avoid triage and went straight to my room!
My Nurses were amazing, attentive and compassionate. They quickly got the paperwork done, put me on pitocin (just to keep my contractions going and help things along) and headed out. Brent and I wanted to experience this just the two of us. My mom was amazing and helped me labor and deliver Genivieve while Bent was working, he got there just before I starting pushing. But it was time we tried it just us two.
I labored on pictocin from 4am-8am and The nurses brought in essential oils to help with nausea and pain and showed Brent how and where to message my back. He was amazing at helping me manage my pain. It was nice and quiet in our room and very relaxing. My contractions slowed down even with the pictocin and by 8am when my doctor came to check on me I was at 4cm. So he broke my water and almost immediately I was back into labor with contractions nice and close.
By 10am I was having about 30seconds between my contraction and they were lasting 1-2mins. The pitocin was at 18 (20 being max) I was so drained I had them call for an epidural thinking I was still at 4cm (They don't check often once your water breaks for risk of infection). He finished my epidural around 10:30 am and told me it would take 20-30 mintues for it to kick in. The whole experience of getting the epidural was horrific. I will never get one again. I starting feeling pressure while he was putting it in and when I laid down they checked me and I was at 7cm.
My sweet nurse called my doctors to come over at 10:30am and I started pushing feeling every bit of everything. It hurt, I was exhausted and I was mad I ever got the epidural because it looked like I was doing this without pain meds anyhow but had to endure someone stabbing me in the spine!
After lots of encouragement from my amazing husband, doctor and nurse Luke arrived at 11:03am and even though I felt everything and It was rather painful to say the least! They moment he came the pain stopped and It was so worth it! IF we ever have another child, I know I can do it without any meds. It was nice not being numb because I could get up right away and move and didn't have to lay in bed for ever!
My wonderful friend Alisha was on call to come capture the first moments of Luke's life. So we called her as they called the doctor and she made it with 5 minutes to spare! I am so grateful we have these pictures and that Brent and I could just enjoy our son and someone else could capture the moment for us to bask in for years to come.
